Simplicity as Statement
Islamic Stories & Wisdom"Never will you attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love."
Quran 3:92, Surah Aal-E-Imran (Sahih International)
Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) ruled an empire. He had access to the treasury; he could dress in the finest attire, in silk, and eat fine food. Instead, he wore simple garments โ one robe, which he mended when it tore.
People said: "You are the ruler. You deserve nice things." Umar replied: "I am the ruler. That is exactly why I cannot enjoy luxuries. If I take from the treasury for myself, I take from the poor."
One day, someone brought him an expensive gift โ silk from distant lands. Umar took it and sold it, giving the money to the poor. The gift-giver was insulted: "I brought this for you as a gift." Umar said: "And I used it well. I changed it into food for the hungry."
Umar's simplicity was not accident โ it was a choice, a statement. It said: "My value is not in my possessions. My value is in my service." People were watching; they saw a ruler who lived simply. Slowly, simplicity spread โ it became fashionable to be humble, respected to own little. Umar changed people not by law, but by example.
This is the power of simplicity: it speaks louder than words. Umar understood that hoarding creates fear, spending on yourself creates guilt, and only giving creates peace โ so he chose to own little and give much. Years later, when Umar died, he owned almost nothing. His entire legacy was not in wealth; it was in the hearts he had changed by changing nothing but his own example. This is true wealth: not what you leave behind in money, but what you leave behind in people's hearts.
Moral of the story: True wealth is not what you leave behind in money, but what you leave behind in people's hearts.
